State Representative Ann Clemmer and State Senator Jeremy Hutchinson have provided the Saline County Circuit Clerk’s Office with a grant for $1,944.34 to pay for putting an Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Historical Marker on the lawn of the Saline County Courthouse.  The grant comes from the Central Arkansas Planning and Development District, Inc.  The marker will tell the story of the “lost seal” of the county which was taken from the court house in August 1863 when Union forces were advancing on Saline County during the Civil War.  In 1996, Gary Smith, an amateur treasure hunter, found the seal that had been used for land and court records while searching in Grant County at a site east of Sheridan.  In 2013, Smith returned the seal to the county after it had been gone for 150 years.  The seal is now on permanent display in the circuit clerk’s office. Shown above at the check presentation are (from left to right) Hutchinson, Clemmer, Saline County Circuit Clerk Dennis Milligan and Deputy Circuit Clerk Patrick Rhodes.
