The county coroner is most often a part-time job in county
government and is utilized on an as-needed bases. When a death is report
to the coroner, he shall conduct an investigation concerning the circumstances
surrounding the death of an individual and gather and review background
information, including but not limited to, medical
information and any other information which may be helpful in determining the
cause and manner of death. (A.C.A. 14-15-301)
Duties of a coroner:
1. The coroner must be notified of all nursing home deaths.
2. If someone was admitted to the hospital and live 5 days then die, the coroner
must be notified.
3. If a person is brought to the emergency room unconscious and is unresponsive with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, measures being performed and dies within 24 hours of admission, the coroner is called.
4. All hospice deaths must be reported.
5. All deaths in county and city other than hospital have to be reported.
6. The coroner must testify on court cases.
7. The coroner must make a decision to send a case to the Medical Examiner for
the cause of death or for an autopsy.
8. The coroner draws toxicology report on all accident victims and has to be
certified by Arkansas State Crime Laboratory.
